The Faculty of Agriculture within the University of Life Sciences "King Mihai I" from
Timisoara has a tradition of over 80 years in the landscape of higher agronomic education
in Romania. Since its establishment in 1945 and until now, the Faculty of Agriculture has
established itself as a reference institution, progressively developing in relation to the
evolution of scientific knowledge and society as a whole. Until 1989, the Faculty
functioned only with the Agriculture specialization, the others being established later, in
response to the demands of the reality of Romanian agriculture, but also as ways to
respond effectively to the demands of the knowledge-based society. Currently, the Faculty
has the following study programs: Agriculture, Plant Protection, Biology, Environmental
Engineering and Protection in Agriculture, Land Measurements and Cadastre, Machinery
and Installations for Agriculture and Food Industry.
Following the Vienna Dictate, the Faculty of Agriculture in Cluj took refuge in Timisoara,
within the Polytechnic School. On July 30, 1945, King Michael I promulgated Law 617 for
the establishment of the Faculty of Agronomy in Timisoara, a law considered to be the
"birth certificate" of this institution. On this occasion, the faculty was also equipped with a
series of farms: Timisoara, Ceala-Arad, Voiteni, Teremia Mare.
Following the Education Reform of 1948, the Agronomic Institute of Timisoara was
established, which functioned under this name, in different structures, until 1990. Over
time, the Institute had in its composition, in addition to the Faculty of Agronomy, a Faculty
of Veterinary Medicine and a Faculty of Animal Husbandry.
Currently, the teaching and research process within the Faculty of Agriculture is carried
out through four departments:
Agricultural technologies
Sustainable development and environmental engineering
Soil Sciences
Biology and Plant protection
The training of students from the bachelor's cycle is carried out within six study programs,
carried out through "daily" and "low frequency" courses (part-time education, for the
Agriculture and Environmental engineering and protection in agriculture programs), with
a duration of studies of 4 years (except for Biology students, who study for 3 years).
Following the bachelor's exam, graduates obtain the title of "Diplomatic Engineer" (for the
programs: Agriculture, Plant Protection, Environmental Engineering and Protection in
Agriculture, Land Measurements and Cadastre, Machinery and Installations for Agriculture
and Food Industry) and "Bachelor in Biology" (for the Biology specialization).
Graduates are offered the opportunity to continue their studies in the master's cycle,
within seven study programs: Ecological Agriculture, Sustainable Technologies for Field
Crops, Sustainable Use of Agricultural Land, Applied Biology in Agriculture, Environmental
and Natural Resources Management, Phytosanitary Protection and Expertise,
Management of Systematic Registration of Real Estate. The studies can be deepened with
the doctoral training cycle, lasting 4 years and ending with obtaining the scientific title of
doctor.
